Growing up
in the UK I often watched my father at work with his trustee Zenit E. For many years this camera was treated like royalty, and I
one day looked forward to being able to use such a wonderful
camera myself.
Sadly with
the passing of time my fathers passion for photography faded
and the Zenit E sat forgotten in a bag in the bottom of a
cupboard.
It was only
after inheriting the Zenit E in 2001
that I learned that it was in fact the most mass produced SLR of the 20th
century. My father's particular one was a little
special though as it turned out to be one of the first Zenit
E's made back in 1977 to commemorate the 1980 Russian
Olympic Games.
With the
passing of time so many Zenit and other manual cameras have
found their way to cupboards, long since forgotten. This is even more prevalent with the dawning of the digital
age.
This is a
sad trend to witness, but it has an upside - these long
since forgotten relics are now finding their way onto the
likes of EBay and into junk sales and are being sold for
silly money, meaning that you don't need to be rich to take
up photography and enjoy the pleasures of this time honoured
art form.
I've always had a desire to learn
photography, or the art of capturing an image, and the
inheritance of my father's camera proved to be the doorway
that allowed me to take up this hobby.
I've also been bitten by the addiction of Russian equipment
and now own several camera's including a Zenit E, Zenit
12XP, Zenit 122, Zenit 19 (the "Mighty 19"), Zenit 12FS-3
Fotosnaiper, Zenit FS122 Fotosnaiper, Zenit S (C) and a
Zenit 412LS. Along with my Russian equipment I have
several digital cameras - my favourite being the Canon 350D.
After five
years of purely amateur photography I have finally been
encouraged (pushed) by those close to me to start doing
professional work, and since December 2006 I have started
doing wedding photography and other similar work.
To-date my
professional work has received good feedback with happy
customers being more than happy to pay for my services. Additionally I have had several photographs published in
local newspapers and I'm presently exploring the
possibilities of doing local freelance work.
